Home Energy Saving Scheme
Overview
Shane McGuinness is an official contractor under the Home Energy Saving Scheme. Full details of the scheme can be found on the SEI website. The Home Energy Saving (HES) scheme provides assistance to homeowners who are interested in improving the energy efficiency of their home in order to reduce energy use and costs and greenhouse gas emissions. It is a national scheme and thus open to all owners of existing houses. The scheme is administered by Sustainable Energy Ireland and its agents.
The scheme has been launched/announced now in order to allow interested contractors to apply for registration. Once there are sufficient registered contractors available to the scheme there will be a further announcement regarding householder applications.
Assistance will be provided by the payment of fixed grants towards the costs of implementing remedial measures. The types of measures eligible under this scheme are roof insulation, wall insulation and heating controls. There is also a grant for households who choose to get a Building Energy Rating (BER) assessment Before and After the works are completed.

Grants are payable when measures are completed in compliance with the scheme’s Terms and Conditions. The steps involved in getting a grant payment are:
Presently, the scheme is not open for Homeowner applications. However, as a homeowner you can start to think about the type of work you might like to undertake and/or engage a BER Assessor to do an energy rating of your home to help you identify areas which could lead to greater comfort levels and reduced energy usage. Terms and Conditions:
Be sure that prior
to applying you have read and understand the scheme's Terms and Conditions (to be
published once the scheme is open for homeowner applications) and in particular
please note the following:
- Grant Approval must be in place prior to any purchase of materials or commencement of measures undertaken.
- You may apply several times, however the grant value of your first application must be €500. The BER assessment grant cannot form part of the €500 amount.
- All works must be carried out by a contractor registered with Sustainable Energy Ireland for this particular scheme.
When might you NOT qualify for a Home Energy Saving scheme grant?
Depending on the scale or type of works being undertaken, the HES grant may not
necessarily be appropriate for all homeowners. Homeowners will not qualify for a
grant:
- If your first grant application would be for less than €500. So if you are only intending to do attic insulation (€250) or blown cavity wall insulation (€400) on their own then you will not qualify for a grant
- If you are only replacing your existing boiler with a typical efficiency boiler (<90% efficiency) then you will not qualify for a grant
- If you decide to simply replace your boiler but not upgrade the heating controls to the minimum prescribed standard then you will not qualify for a grant
- If you wish to get a grant for a Building Energy Rating (BER) then you must undertake a BER both before and after undertaking the appropriate grant aided measures.
